Music Highlight: Amused to Death by Roger Waters

Jul 05, 2023 |

Roger Waters rose to prominence as the lyricist and lead vocalist for Pink Floyd, and was regarded as a musician of solid tone who did just enough to make their songs feel magical.

He has also been successful in his own creative endeavours and album releases under his own name. The third studio album, Amused to Death, was released on September 7, 1992. Several tunes on the album feature Jeff Beck playing lead guitar, which was inspired by Neil Postman's book Amusing Ourselves to Death. The title of the album was derived from Neil Postman's 1985 book Amusing Ourselves to Death.

The focus of Amused to Death is the effects of television mass media. The album is loosely structured around the concept of an ape randomly flipping through channels on a television, but it investigates numerous political and social themes, including critiques of the First Gulf War in "The Bravery of Being Out of Range" and "Perfect Sense."

The album was produced in London at The Billiard Room, Olympic Studios, CTS Studios, Angel Recording Studios, and Abbey Road Studios in collaboration with Patrick Leonard and Nick Griffiths. When listening to the tracks, you may hear various sound effects that enhance the spatial audio experience, including rifle range ambience, sleigh-bells, automobiles, aeroplanes, horses in the distance, chirping crickets, and canines.
