Music Highlight: Cure for Pain by Morphine

Jan 12, 2024 |

In 1989, Mark Sandman, Dana Colley, and Jerome Deupree created the American rock group Morphine in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Except for the title track, which Conway recorded, Deupree recorded the album Cure For Pain before Conway took over permanently in 1993. In March 1999, both drummers shared the stage on a 15-date US tour. They split up after five great albums and a long tour, with lead singer Sandman passing away on July 3, 1999, in Palestrina, Italy, from a heart attack.

The band Morphine had a unique sound that was referred to as "low rock" since they blended blues and jazz components with more conventional rock arrangements. Sandman was known for his "deep, laid-back croon" style of singing, and his songs were heavily influenced by beats.

"Cure for Pain": Morphine's second album, released in 1993, showcases their unique blend of blues, jazz, and rock. Formed in 1989, the American alternative rock band gained acclaim, especially in the indie rock community in the United States, supported by public and college radio stations and MTV's 120 Minutes.
