The Blue Nile, originating from Scotland, set themselves apart with a unique form of music culminating from the use of synthesizers, percussion and electronic instrumentation. However, the band eventually molded themselves into the typical band by incorporating guitar works in their later works. The Blue Nile saw early support from well-known performers like Rickie Lee Jones and Peter Gabriel. They also received critical praise, especially for their first two albums, A Walk Across the Rooftops and Hats, as well as some commercial success in the US and the UK. As a result, the band began collaborating with a variety of musicians in the late 1980s.
The Blue Nile's second studio album, Hats, was first made available on Linn Records and A&M Records on October 16, 1989.
A full album's worth of work was shelved during a protracted wait until Hats was finally released to overwhelmingly positive reviews, including an unusual five-star rating from Q magazine. Reaching number 12 on the UK album charts and producing three singles, "The Downtown Lights," "Headlights on the Parade," and "Saturday Night," it also turned into the band's most successful album.
