Miller was born in Hurlingham, Argentina, and his first public performance was as the lone white member of a soul music band at a club in Racine. His musical training began at Boston's renowned Guildhall School of Music and continued at Boston's Berklee College of Music. Sebastião Tapajós, a Brazilian guitarist, also taught him.
Miller performed as a guitarist with World Party and King Swamp during their 1980s tour. He recorded as a session musician for Level 42, Phil Collins, Paul Young, and the Pretenders. He has collaborated with Sting on albums and tours since 1990.The popular song "Shape of My Heart" was co-written by him and Sting.
