Kites is the fifth studio album by Leeds-based collective Submotion Orchestra, released in 2018 via SMO Recordings. The album marks a return to the band's signature blend of smoky, jazz-infused electronica, reminiscent of their acclaimed debut, Finest Hour. Drawing from personal experiences, including themes of new life and loss, the band used photographs as creative prompts, crafting ten tracks that explore a range of emotions and events.
The album features Ruby Wood's soulful vocals, layered over lush arrangements of piano, horns, and ambient textures. Standout tracks like "Variations," "Branches," and the title track "Kites" showcase the band's ability to create atmospheric soundscapes that are both delicate and powerful.
