Interview with Gordon Inch

With a massive history of 50 Years in the making, Linn couldn’t be more relevant than ever. In the faith of modern audio technologies, we feel a growing appreciation for the sculpted sound of vinyl. To us, it truly embodies the spirit of music.

As a preparation for our event, we asked Gordon Inch, the real Record Guru who will guide you through the realm of turntables, to play back the history of Linn throughout the years.

We start our conversation with Gordon Inch in 1973. Let's set the scene!

1973

Linn, maker of premiere turntables like Majik LP12 as well as the iconic and very rare LP12-50, is founded.

Record of the year: Aladdin Sane – David Bowie

What is the brand’s philosophy on audio and how would you describe the Linn audio experience regardless of the year we are in?

The brand’s philosophy is that music makes life better, and a Linn system can take you closer than ever to your favourite artists. For half a century as an independent, family-owned business, we have gone to extremes to pursue musical perfection, and that journey continues. We’d love you to join us and be part of it.

Sondek LP12 receives its first electronic power supply – Valhalla. Valhalla’s circuit board marks Linn's first venture into electronics proper.

Record of the Year: New Gold Dream – Simple Minds

Tell us about Sondek LP12. What is so special about and how did the introduction of the series change the art of “listening”?

When the Linn story began in 1973, the first product we made was the iconic Sondek LP12, a turntable designed to be immune to the quality-sapping effects of acoustic feedback where the output from the speakers causes a vibration between the stylus and vinyl groove, leading to distortion. It was, and still is, a huge success and allowed Linn’s founder, Ivor Tiefenbrun, to embark on a mission to prove to the world that ‘source first’ was the only true pathway to musical nirvana. Ivor was called a maverick, a renegade, and sometimes much worse, but time has proven him right. Today, the HiFi world understands that the foundation for any good audio system has to be right from the very beginning, from the Source First.

1998

The only other product made by Linn to earn the Sondek moniker, Sondek CD12 crests a new pinnacle of performance and build-quality for CD players.

Record of the Year: Without you I’m nothing - Placebo

Vinyl versus everything else: as a Record Guru what makes you obsessed with vinyl and what sort of way of living does this passion imply?

Vinyl asks for a commitment from you – logistically you need to store a large collection of records, they’re expensive, you need to keep them clean and free from imperfections, and at the back of your mind, you are conscious that every time you play them, they, and your precious diamond stylus, wear just that little bit more. However, the pleasure I get from carrying out the ritual of sliding the record from its sleeve onto your fingers and delicately placing it on the turntable is worth this heavy commitment. Perhaps this makes me yearn for simpler times.

Majik LP12

2011

Majik DS-I is rebadged as Majik DSM.

Record of the Year: Hardcore will never die, but you will - Mogwai

Majik DS-I is rebadged as Majik DSM. What is so unique about the Majik series that makes it compete with the Sondek series? Does the idea of innovation align with the culture of turntables?

The Majik series is an outstanding ‘first step’ into the world of audiophile HiFi, without being intimidating to those who are new to this world. It truly is a HiFi system in one box. Like the Sondek LP12, the Majik range of products has evolved as technology and engineering at Linn has improved. Those advances in technology, software, electronic design, acoustic and mechanical design have equally benefited our turntable range.

2023

Dubai Audio and Linn organise their Turntable Workshop to celebrate the art of vinyl and bring together record lovers.

Record of the Year: Angel Numbers – Hamish Hawk

We are inviting people to the November 7, The Linn x Dubai Audio Workshop. What can those who attend expect?

During the LP12 Klinik, we will cover the spectacular history of the iconic Linn Sondek LP12 turntable, from its origin to its current specification. We will outline some of the upgrades that Linn has offered over the last five years and the benefits they bring to the owner. We will finish with an overview of the exclusive limited edition Sondek LP12-50, a unique collaboration by Linn and ex-apple design empresario, Sir Jony Ive. After that, we’ll listen to some music and answer any questions that the attendees have.

What does this unique collaboration symbolize for vinyl lovers? What will the future history of turntables look like?

The resurgence in the popularity of vinyl shows no sign of slowing down, in fact the opposite seems to be true, and when someone, at some point in their life, comes to understand what vinyl can offer in terms of experiencing music rather than simply hearing it, Linn and Dubai Audio will be waiting with the iconic Sondek LP12. Given Linn’s ability to extract more and more information from the groove of your favourite vinyl record, I am excited to see where the future takes the last turntable you’ll ever buy.

Special Note from Adil Anwar, Co-Founder and Director, Dubai Audio

We are honored and privileged to partner with one of the finest brands in the industry and especially proud to offer the iconic Linn Sondek LP12 to music lovers in the UAE. This is one of the best investments one can make, as Linn continues to support even those customers who have one recordplayer all the way back from 1973.

If you would like to be part of the future history of vinyl culture, join our new circle and Gordon Inch on November 7th at our Dubai Hills Showroom.
