Sabrina X Overview
Flagship DNA
The Chronosonic XVX® is Wilson Audio’s most ambitious and complex production loudspeaker to date. Daryl Wilson and his team of designers and engineers borrowed some of its technology from the limited-edition WAMM Master Chronosonic®, itself the beneficiary of the most prolonged and intense research-and-development cycle in history of the company. Much of the technology and many of the features of theXVX, however, are new and specific to that model. Indeed, Wilson introduced more new performance and ergonomic elements in the XVX than during any other design effort.
Fresh on the XVX project’s heels, Daryl and his team turned their attention to Wilson’s smallest floor-stander. The SabrinaX is a ground-up rethinking of the Sabrina®, the universally loved, small, floor-standing loudspeaker from Wilson Audio. Like the original Sabrina, the new X-version is a rare combination of traditional Wilson hallmark attributes such as bass authority, dynamic resolution, midrange beauty and integrity, and a sense of inherent musical “rightness.” Wilson’s goal was to design a loudspeaker that could stand alongside much larger systems. Like its flagship sibling, the Chronosonic XVX, SabrinaX offers a level of dynamic contrast and harmonic expression that is the defining character of Wilson Audio loudspeakers.
Enclosure
X-Material has long been the cornerstone of Wilson’s composite technology. In its third iteration, X-Material remains unbeatable for its rigidity, inertness, intrinsic damping, and extreme hardness. For this reason, Wilson Audio’s engineers deploy X-Material in several different applications throughout Wilson’s model lineup. The original Sabrina utilized X-Material only in its baffle and lower spike plate. Now, the SabrinaX’s outer enclosure is constructed entirely from X-Material. The SabrinaX cabinet comes that much closer to the near-silent ideal Wilson has relentlessly pursued for decades. The music emerges through SabrinaX from a blacker background. Bass transients and overall clarity are vastly improved. Listeners will hear superior “silence between the notes,” which, among other factors, enhances SabrinaX’s rhythmic timing and pace. SabrinaX’s new bracing system augments all the above qualities by further reducing cabinet-born resonances. Like all modern Wilson loudspeakers, the engineers meticulously utilized laser vibrometry in an exhaustive exploration of the best cabinet geometries.
Drivers
Tweeter from the XVX
The tweeter chosen for SabrinaX is the Convergent Synergy MK5, which Daryl and the team developed initially for the limited-edition WAMM Master Chronosonic. The MK5 later became an integral part of the Chronosonic XVX’s design. The Wilson tweeter combines ultra-low distortion, exquisite micro and macro contrast, and ultra-high resolution, all of which are accompanied by a sense of ease, accessibility, and supreme musicality. Technically and musically, the MK5 is—by a comfortable margin—the most honest and engaging tweeter we’ve experienced to date.
Midrange
The 5.75-inch midrange driver is remarkably smooth throughout its bandwidth (which extends flat to 2 kHz, facilitating the elevated crossover point to the tweeter). Midrange honesty, resolution, and beauty are the paramount qualities of all Wilson loudspeakers, and SabrinaX’s midrange is no exception. The crossover points allow the driver to perform optimally within the “sweet spot” of its range.
Woofer from the Sasha DAW™
The new 8-inch woofer designed and developed for the Sasha DAW’s bass module now finds a home in the SabrinaX. This state-of-the-art driver
is installed into an all-new, exceptionally inert bass cabinet, which provides the perfect platform for the driver’s intrinsically excellent dynamic resolution and transient performance. Together, these elements contribute to a rich and yet ultra-fast midbass, which is, in turn, supported by an authoritative bass foundation. SabrinaX’s bass articulation, transient speed, and the bottom-octave extension will demolish any preconceptions about the bass quality and accuracy that such a small loudspeaker can produce.
Hardware
Unlike the plastic items found in many high-end loudspeakers, Wilson ports have always been heroic. We machine this critical element from a solid billet of 6061-T6 aluminum. Over the years, we’ve refined our port shapes for better performance. For the SabrinaX, a new geometry effectively reduces already low port noise.
The new model utilizes the same Wilson-designed and -manufactured binding post as the XVX. It is easier to tighten by hand, and also features a banana-plug option. This unique Wilson Audio connector resets the bar for reliability and sonic integrity within high-current connections.
The SabrinaX uses the same spike/diode assembly found in the Chronosonic XVX, which increases the mechanical impedance path and improves vibration “draining.” The larger diode also enhances the physical presence and beauty of the design.
AudioCapX™
The first Wilson loudspeaker to benefit from Wilson’s recent integration of capacitor design and manufacturer into its factory in Provo, Utah, was the Chronosonic XVX. Led by engineer Vern Credille, the design team developed a proprietary multi-wound capacitor specifically for the XVX, which the engineers dubbed AudioCapXWA. The team took a similar approach with Wilson’s smallest floor-stander. Vern designed a custom version of the Wilson AudioCapX explicitly for SabrinaX’s crossover. The new capacitor technology significantly lowers the noise floor to even greater extremes, allowing the listener to hear more detail and resolution. As is true for all Wilson loudspeakers, Wilson’s craftspeople painstakingly hand-assemble SabrinaX’s crossover. Wilson leads the industry for the quality of its crossover execution and ultra-rigorous manufacturing tolerances. The AudioCapX advances Wilson’s ability on this front as well.
Diablo 300 Integrated Amplifier
Gryphon Diablo is quite possibly the most popular High End integrated amplifier of all time. Despite sales of thousands of units, its virtual absence from the second-hand market is a reliable indicator of the extreme loyalty of Diablo owners.
Now, the Gryphon Diablo makes way for the Gryphon Diablo 300, a revitalized iteration of the technologies and components that made it the world’s most award-winning High End integrated amplifier.
In updating the Diablo, the Gryphon engineering team faced a considerable challenge. In addition to Product of the Year awards including Lyd & Bilde (Norway), 6 Moons.com (USA), and Haute Fidelité (France), many of the most critical professional listeners have been inspired to effusive praise, as in this evocative turn of phrase from Hi-Fi Choice (UK): ”Sounds like God’s own stereo.”
And there are many more:
“Ultimately, Gryphon’s Diablo is a contradiction in terms, because the sound it makes is truly Angelic.” – Australian Hi-Fi
“Spectacular design and equally spectacular sound quality. An ultra-cool potent amplifier for demanding loudspeakers and demanding listeners.” – Lyd & Bilde (Norway)
“The phenomenal level of resolution, detail retrieval, ambiance recreation and dynamics this amplifier is capable of.” – 6moons.com
The original Diablo also found its way into the pages of the mainstream press, where the Sydney Morning Herald (Australia) praised its “exceptional sound quality, even when driving speakers other amplifiers have found difficult to handle.”
Taking It Further
Fortunately, in designing the Diablo 300, the Gryphon crew had the luxury and privilege of being able to draw heavily on concepts, components, and technological breakthroughs that emerged during the evolution of the much-lauded Gryphon Pandora preamplifier and Mephisto power amplifier.
The ultra-transparent, fully balanced volume attenuator topology fully exploits the two balanced inputs. Unlike the vast majority of solid-state volume controls that typically introduce dozens of resistors in the signal path, the Diablo 300 employs no more than two for any given level setting.
The extreme wideband frequency response of the Diablo 300 extends from 0.5 Hz to 350 kHz and its prodigious 300 Watt (8 Ohms) power output capability represents a significant increase over the original Diablo. The extremely high current capability of the Diablo 300 allows it to double its output to 600 Watts in a 4 Ohm load and deliver a massive 950 Watts into 2 Ohms.
As these numbers confirm, the Gryphon Diablo 300 will remain rock solid when confronted with even the most viciously reactive loudspeaker loads.
Diablo 300 maintains a power reservoir capacity of 68,000 microFarad and employs local active shunt regulators for superior noise suppression compared to the Zener diode-regulated low-voltage supplies of the original Diablo.
Because it operates without negative feedback, the Gryphon Diablo 300 avoids both the intrinsic time delay caused by sending the output signal to the input for a comparator loop and the resulting intermodulation distortion between time-offset signals.
Further highlights include massive, overkill power supplies, high-Class A/B bias, state-of-the-art audiophile components throughout, mounted on military specification dual- and four-layer printed circuit boards with virtually no point-to-point wiring.
Diablo 300 utilizes new, low-capacitance pre-driver transistors and increased current in the voltage amplification stage for extended bandwidth and increased slew rate. The wire-wound emitter diodes in the original Diablo output stage have been upgraded to non-inductive types.
The power supplies for various amplification stages employ only polypropylene coupling capacitors in parallel with high-grade electrolytic capacitors.
To dissipate heat generated by the increased power of the Diablo 300, the unit is fitted with twice as much heatsink area as its predecessor. The highly efficient recessed heatsink array is cleverly integrated into the smooth exterior for a stylish statement that takes the Diablo 300 architecture well beyond the realm of undistinguished laboratory styling common to so many High-End audio components.
Vinyl and Digital Options
At the time of original purchase or as the need arises at a later date, Gryphon Diablo 300 can be fitted with a specially designed Gryphon DAC PCM/DSD module based on the innovative, award-winning Gryphon Kalliope digital-to-analog converter. The module adds five digital inputs (USB, balanced AES 115 Ω, optical and dual S/PDIF 75 Ω). USB can process PCM up to 32-bit/384 kHz as well as DSD (Windows OS up to DSD512, Mac OS up to DSD128, Linux OS up to DSD128 DoP).
The remaining digital connections can handle PCM up to 24-bit/192 kHz.
This future-proof digital module is ready for any current or foreseeable high-resolution digital format.
And, in the finest Gryphon tradition, the Diablo 300 offers the option of an exceptional MM/MC phono stage for the dedicated enthusiasts who continue to enjoy the musical treasures etched in the grooves of the long-playing, black vinyl disc.
Style and Ease of Use
Despite its substantial size and heft, the satin black, brushed aluminum chassis and gleaming black acrylic faceplate of the Gryphon Diablo 300 exudes luxurious elegance that will enhance any interior. Form and function come together as the non-magnetic, non-resonant chassis and isolated power supplies for pre and power stages and control and display functions shield against interference.
The Gryphon Diablo 300 is controlled via an intuitively simple touch-sensitive front panel user interface and a software-based menu display that allow the owner to customize key functions. Future software updates can be installed via flash memory as they are developed.
A large alphanumeric Vacuum Fluorescent Display prominently exhibits the name of the active input and the current volume setting. Personalized input source names up to eight characters long can be assigned in the display.
All functions are accessible from the front panel or the striking remote wand. So there are no mechanical parts to wear out or become noisy.
In the words of HiFi+ (UK):
“The remote is one of the very best I have tried, a long, slim metal design that enables you to get where you want to be quickly and completely intuitively. It is an object lesson in uncluttered clarity and it makes the amplifier a joy to control.”
Exclusive Features
Diablo 300 incorporates a full-range subwoofer output and, for use in a surround setup without compromising the stereo performance of the Diablo 300, an AV throughput allows the Diablo 300 to drive the two main channels without the need to rewire or recalibrate the system when switching between stereo and surround operation.
Diablo 300 can be configured for automatic level matching of inputs to protect the owner’s ears and equipment when switching between sources with varying output levels. The volume control is linked to the Mute control to prevent increasing volume while the muting circuit is active. This eliminates the risk of loudspeaker damage through accidental overpowering.
For further protection, a fixed start level and fixed maximum level can be selected in the Diablo 300 setup menu.
An intelligent, non-invasive protection system constantly monitors operational status and, in the unlikely event of any problem, shuts down quickly and safely to protect your investment.
Custom-built Gryphon speaker terminals accept bare wire, spade lugs, or banana plugs for a tight, reliable connection, and 12V DC link inputs and outputs are provided for integration with a home automation system.
The Diablo 300 Mission
Vast reserves of pure, stable power ensure speed, precision, authority, effortless rendering of dynamic contrasts, and a spellbindingly natural experience of the emotional ebb and flow of any style of music.
Like few audio components, Gryphon Diablo 300 keeps musical strands and layers distinct, yet cohesive, as it brings timeless art and artistry to your home.
